As a photographer, the arrival of my grandson, Trace, has opened up an entirely new world of inspiration and excitement. With his surprise arrival a few days before Christmas—earlier than we all anticipated—I knew I had the perfect opportunity to capture some truly memorable moments for his candid newborn portraits. It is going to be hard to resist the urge to schedule photo sessions with him every month!

Candid Newborn Portraits

Since Trace arrived during the holiday season I had a idea for his first photo session. Knowing how much his mom, Cassidy, adores the Grinch, I couldn't resist dressing Trace up in a Grinch outfit. His tiny, somewhat grumpy expression was the perfect match for the costume. The look on Cassidy’s face when she saw her little Grinch for the first time was absolutely priceless, making the surprise even more special.

I incorporated a few more personal touches to his newborn shoot that reflected our family’s passions and backgrounds. Trace’s dad serves in the Iowa National Guard, so integrating camo and dog tags into the session was a heartfelt nod to his dedication and service. These elements added a deeply personal layer to the photographs, blending the essence of our family’s story with the innocence of our newest member. And, of course, we couldn't forget about our love for the Hawkeyes. An Iowa singlet became a fun addition to Trace's wardrobe too! Go Hawks!

Creating these themed photo sessions for Trace not only allows me to express my creativity as a photographer, but also helps us document his growth and the joy he brings into our lives. It's a beautiful way of capturing these fleeting moments, creating memories that we'll look back on for years to come.
