Guide to Senior Portraits: The Guys | Iowa Senior Portrait Photographer

June 11, 2018  •  Leave a Comment

Last week on the blog, I shared 5 tips to make your senior portraits less stressful (read it here!). I also have some general tips I like to share to both my guy and girl seniors based on the typical experiences I've had with my sessions in the past. So today, I'm focusing on the guys! Guys - I know that senior portraits (or really any portrait sessions) aren't really your thing. I get that! As a mom of boys, I really do understand that getting dressed up and smiling at a camera isn't the number one activity for the weekend. But I promise you, it's worth it! These portraits capture who you are when your high school career ends and the rest of your life is waiting ahead of you. They're a celebration of the hard work and dedication you've kept throughout your sports career, your hunting seasons or your other hobbies. So, guys, here's a few quick tips to make your portrait session easier and more enjoyable for you!

1. Come to your session cleanly shaven. I can guarantee your parents will be much happier if you do! The stubble? Not the best look!

2. Bring props! Bring your sports equipment, uniforms, the car you restored, your favorite motorcycle... whatever it is you love, I want to hear about it! I want to capture you in your element - so let me know if you want to try to use a sports field for part of your session!

3. Don't be concerned with a minor breakout. Acne happens and I can take care of most of it in post-processing! If you're really concerned, ask a friend to help you with concealer but it's usually not at all necessary.

4. Style your hair with a little bit of product and hair spray - even if you usually wouldn't use it. Fly aways become a pain throughout our session so it's easier to have everything looking nice up front. Bring a comb in case we need to fix up anything!

5. Try to relax and have fun with me. I may ask you to pose in a way that feels strange or funny, but trust that I know what I'm doing. These sessions aren't meant to be torture. We want to celebrate you so let's do that together!

I'm looking forward to our session!
